Peer over the walls of the California Correctional Institution (CCI) and see the faces of current and formerly incarcerated citizens, system impacted families and victims of crime. Hear them as they share their stories of mercy, rehabilitation, and their experiences in America's legal system.
In October 2019, French artist JR created a one-of-a-kind art activation within the walls of California Correctional Institution: Tehachapi in Southern California-- a maximum security 4 facility.
JR and his team captured the portraits and stories of 48 current and formerly incarcerated individuals, victims, and families impacted by the system. The men whose faces became a part of the final image, with the help of JR's team and correctional officers, took the 338 pieces of paper and pasted them to the grounds of the recreational yard at CCI. The final result was shot with a drone from a birds-eye view.
