Inspired by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, JR’s Chronicles series imagines how an entire city can be represented through art.
In November 2022, JR’s mobile studio, set up inside a 53-foot-long truck, visited ten different neighborhoods that make up the fabric of Miami. Anyone who passed by was invited to have their portrait taken. Each participant was asked how they wanted to represent and express themself before they posed for their photo and recorded their voice in an audio booth. The result is a highly realistic photographic mural that captures the stories of 1, 048 people, offering a window into the social dynamics and paradoxes present in Miami life.
As one of JR’s most intricate and epic murals to date, The Chronicles of Miami debuted across two facades during Art Basel in December 2023. Explore the mural and meet the artists, service workers, business owners, and beachgoers among others who call Miami home.
