Inspired by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, JR’s Chronicles series imagines how an entire city can be represented through art.In the fall of 2024, JR and his team moved their nomadic photo studio around Kyoto inviting passers-by to have their portraits taken and stories recorded. The result is a highly realistic photographic mural that captures the stories of 505 people, that offers a window into the social dynamics and paradoxes in Kyoto and will be revealed at KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival in April 2025.
The Chronicles of Kyoto is installed in Kyoto Station, and is the main feature of the exhibition "Printing the Chronicles of Kyoto" presented inside the former printing plant of Kyoto Shimbun, from April 12 to May 11, 2025.
