Inspired by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, JR's Chronicles series explores how an entire city—or, in this case, a country—can be represented through art.
In December 2019, JR and his team traveled across Cuba with a mobile photographic studio, visiting 12 cities and meeting hundreds of Cubans from all walks of life. Each participant was invited to express themselves in their own way before being photographed and recording their voice in an audio booth.
The result is Las Crónicas de Cuba, a striking photographic mural featuring 845 individuals, offering an intimate window into the social fabric of the nation. As JR's first Chronicles project created in Spanish, it captures the depth and diversity of Cuban identity through personal stories and collective representation.
